I wish more of the world thought this way. We are all familiar with the stereotypical rich businessman who has built a fortune on the backs of poor people. The political rhetoric of “99% versus 1%” speaks to this same mentality that the success of the 1% takes away from the poverty of the 99%. Likewise when we read about “Wall Street versus Main Street.”
Perhaps this is one way to look at the world and to look at other people. I can’t imagine looking at people as having more or less than they are entitled to, nor can I imagine looking at the world as a pie that we must split up equitably. Rather, business should be full of win-win situations, where I provide you with a product or a service that you need, and then we are both better off. The world is no pie. If it were, however, it would be one that we are all capable of making larger.
As a college professor I take great pride in preparing students for the Accounting profession. My relationship with students is always win-win. I help you prepare for your career (in which you may very well make way more money than me), and you pay tuition, which I take home as a paycheck.
We should try, as best as we can, to carry this mentality over into all of our business. Sell things that people want and need, things that will benefit them. Give your customer “value.” Keep your prices reasonable. Know your customers and employees, and care about them.
